In the latest Windows 11 24H2 update, Microsoft has reintroduced the ability to customize the Win+C keyboard shortcut, allowing users to launch the ChatGPT desktop application directly. This feature, previously associated with the now-defunct Cortana and later with Copilot, has been expanded to support third-party AI applications like ChatGPT, provided certain conditions are met.

Enabling ChatGPT Launch via Win+C

To configure the Win+C shortcut to open ChatGPT, users must ensure they have installed the ChatGPT desktop application from the Microsoft Store. Once installed, navigate to Settings > Personalization > Text input, and locate the Customize Copilot key on keyboard / Win+C option. By selecting “Custom” and choosing ChatGPT from the dropdown menu, the Win+C shortcut will be reassigned to launch ChatGPT instead of Copilot.

It’s important to note that this customization is only available on systems running Windows 11 build 26100.4202 (24H2) or with the KB5058499 update installed. Additionally, only applications that meet Microsoft’s criteria—such as being single-window and registered appropriately—will appear as options for the Win+C shortcut.

Historical Context of Win+C Shortcut

The Win+C shortcut has undergone several transformations throughout Windows’ history. Initially, it opened the Charms Bar in Windows 8, then was repurposed for Cortana in Windows 10. With Cortana’s deprecation, Copilot took over the shortcut. Now, with the latest update, users have the flexibility to assign this shortcut to ChatGPT, reflecting Microsoft’s shift towards accommodating diverse AI tools.

Implications for Users

This development signifies Microsoft’s recognition of the growing importance of third-party AI applications in users’ workflows. By allowing customization of the Win+C shortcut, Windows 11 enhances user autonomy and streamlines access to preferred AI tools like ChatGPT.

For users seeking to integrate ChatGPT more seamlessly into their daily tasks, this shortcut customization offers a convenient solution, reducing reliance on manual application launches and fostering a more efficient computing experience.
